HAYMARKET

An Account of the Origins of May Day
216 pages
Released: 15 September 2023
Chicago, 1886. The living conditions of the workers, mainly of immigrant origin, are appalling. Tensions over the eight-hour workday are at their height. One evening in May, a tragic event throws eight men into the turmoil of a travesty of justice, the outcome of which is known as “Black Friday”. The repercussions are international, culminating in the celebration of May 1st, the International Workers' Day. Haymarket tells the story of these men whose ideas and struggle for dignity and justice earned them persecution from the State and the powerful. In the course of this historical narrative, in which the author attempts to imagine the feelings that inhabited them, from their childhood to their last days, we plunge into the heart of a young country grappling with its contradictions. Because fragments of the past sometimes give us the keys to the present, this book will appeal to all curious minds, as well as to those who still believe that another world is possible.
